How we move

How we move is critical to reducing our chances of tissue overload & injury.  But too many of us, move & load our tissues in a such a way that the risk of injury & overload is high. Many of us spend our days stuck in unhealthy positions, with little to no movement throughout the working day & every chance of some stress thrown in as well.  After the working day is complete, most will go to the gym or go out for a run with no thought to how their body has been positioned throughout the day. Over time either pain or injury will occur, some cannot understand how or why this has happened as nothing has changed in their routines.  Probe a little deeper & the factors are there - stress, lack of quality movement, overload, poor sleep etc. Getting the fundamentals & the basics right straight away in the rehab will provide long lasting results.

tissues recover but the nervous system remembers

Many of us have been injured sometime in our lifetime.  But how many of us have either …. → Had the same repeated injury over and over again?→ Had various different other injuries because of an original injury?→ Have had to stop training, playing sport or doing what you enjoy because of this injury? Long after the injury and tissues have healed either through rest or some form of therapy, the true stressor may still be apparent …. THE NERVOUS SYSTEM!! How many of you move in a conscious way rather than a sub conscious way in an effort to try & reduce your pain or the likely hood of re-injurying yourself? Moving in this conscious way is more likely to increase your chances of re-injury or worse developing a new injury.  The rehabilitation process should be about updating and changing the nervous systems beliefs in a more positive way to reduce the likelihood of injury & move in a more sub-conscious way.  #nervoussystem #rehab #rehabiltation #sportstherapy #jrsportstherapy #alliedhealth #beliefs #positive #backpain #injury #ankleinjury #anatomy #humanmovement #covid-19 #ltelehealth #onlineassessments #onlineconsultations

Covid-19 & Training

Here is a short video discussing the effects that over training & how having a sedentary lifestyle during this current pandemic can have a negative effect on our current day to day living.

STICK MOBILITY

For those that have been following me on social media over the past few weeks, would of seen the couple of videos & pictures that I have posted of me using some bright coloured orange sticks to get into some tricky poses.  Normal 0 false false false EN-GB X-NONE X-NONE /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;}  These bright coloured orange sticks are called ‘Stick Mobility’ & have been founded by Dennis Dunphy, Neal Valera, & Mitch Taylor, all of which have education in either human movement, rehabilitation, sports medicine & fitness.  Together they created Stick Mobility, that is a system designed to help move our bodies in a much better way than ever.  It is a method that allows us to improve our range of movement & enhances our neuromuscular awareness.  Mobility is the ability to move & move without restriction or pain.  Together mobility is a combination of flexibility, strength & motor control throughout the whole range of movement present at a joint. What is neuromuscular training?  Many of us when exercising fail to include specific mobility training, when we complete mobility drills prior to a training session we stimulate the neuromuscular system, providing the nervous system to be more adaptable, generate a more fast & optimal muscle firing pattern & provide an increase in dynamic joint stability, allowing a decrease in joint forces & to establish new movement patterns and skills (Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Physical Therapy 2OOl;3l(ll):620-631).  This increase in neuromuscular awareness provides a decrease in the risk of injury as the joint becomes more stable when exercising.  The human body has been designed with joints that can flex, extend, rotate & glide & with the use of neuromuscular control throughout your joints provides a resistance to injury. With Stick Mobility you are able to move at your own pace, using your own strength & existing mobility to access your bodies full potential.  The sticks provide a base of support to help movement become easier & to allow the exercises to be held for longer.
